RIKEA

Firenze, Italia – During the Festival della Creativitá, I was fortunate enough to learn about some interesting projects that I think are worth knowing about, discussing, and sharing. One of these projects, known as ‘rikea’ is the work of Marco Lampugnani and Antonio Scarponi. The project won an honorable mention award at the 4th International Architectural Biennale in Rotterdam, where it is on display until January of 2010.

‘Rikea’ is a prototype for a micro urban structure that conceives the free market Balon (Turin, Italy), as a system of ‘instant urbanization’. The project was prototyped together with IKEA and Italcementi. It consists of tiles for the recognition of the merchants’ position on the public space where it is possible to install elements of the system ‘broder’ produced by IKEA in order to support temporary shelters. The re-use of the foldable sofa ’svingen’ (IKEA) is adapted to realize a trolley for goods delivery. (© mlampu & conceptualdevices)

Rikea is a project by Marco Lampugnani (www.mlampu.eu) and Antonio Scarponi (www.conceptualdevices.com).

RIKEA is part of a project involved in Torino Geodesign (promoted by architectural magazine ABITARE and Torino World Design Capital), an experiment in democratic design.
RIKEA has been conceived and realized by Marco Lampugnani and Antonio Scarponi together with Balon’s community (Turin, Italy) and IKEA, as a self-made, foldable market cart.
It mixes-hybridizes former IKEA products (such as beds, shelves, bags etc) to obtain a brand new – more complex – object.
